A Writer’s Journal

The WEATHER, you guys!!! (Do I start every post like this? lol) It’s been so ridiculously rainy and blustery and dreamy that our creative brains went into overdrive, and we just had to call a writing party! I had my new journal open next to me for scrawling notes while I wrote, and I thought it might be fun to share them with y’all. πŸ™‚

I give ye…

What Goes On In Anna’s Brain (Other Than Writing) While Writing!

Dear Journal, Kate bought writing snacks (banana chips, candy, and chocolate covered pretzels), and my oldest sister Perry stayed through nephew naptime to write and edit with us! Now to smash this evil first draft of woes. ~A

Wow. So my computer died and so I plugged it in (beware of the cord, all ye!) and now it will. not. load. My career as a procrastinator has been sabotaged. Or helped. Or whatever. I’m confusing myself. πŸ˜› ~Anna

Writing/editing party with the siblings!!!

lol lol lol. I literally just wrote, “The darkness became darker”. Oh, the life of a writer!! 1:44 pm

Trying to figure out how to write my sick MC throwing up, and Mom “offered” to stick her finger down my throat so I can know what it feels like. GROSS!

Saved a Smarties for Paul. Wish he were here writing with us, but… nasty old college.

I need to write a story where the girl’s name is Tita and the boy’s name is Nic so their “ship” name would be “Titanic”. Then I’d sink the ship by having someone named Iceberg enter the story. Actually, I need to finish this story first. So bye. ~Anna

Lunch is a good invention.

My fingers are tingling in coldness. You’d think typing would cheer them up a bit but NOO!! 3:47 pm

829 words on my down-point so far today! I think I’m slowly convincing her to stop being down… finally. ~A

Dear Journal, So here’s the deal… one thing that helps force my MC out of the down-point is when she stumbles on the East End (heavily bombed poor district in London) and meets a group of Blitz refugees living under a bridge, and she has to decide to stop thinking about her problems so much and help out someone else for a change. Can you tell I’m a bit annoyed with my MC currently?? lol But it’s cool because as I was having her run around all grumpy and sick, I had her meet these random people and then BOOM they stuck around and helped out with the plot. Thanks billions, cool folks!! ~A

The sun is finally coming through the blinds to warm up the room. YAY! 4:30 pm

When you realize they set the table for dinner around your writing tools. XD (also like my weird story notes?! πŸ˜› )

2,997 words until I can write my climax!!!!!! Can you tell I’m excited?? πŸ˜‰ 4:46 pm

To Maggie @ 4:50 pm : “like, my MC is still alive. so that’s good.”

“Awkwording” needs to be a writer’s term for when you don’t like the words, but you’re doing the words anyway.

I wrote 1,000 words on Eagledare today! πŸ˜€ It took way much longer than ever before to get that little bit written, but hey, I’m liking where this part randomly decided to go! XD ~A

Did you enjoy this slightly strange post of me chronicling my story writing? πŸ˜€ Tell me!

(Also, please please say I’m not the only one who has problems with forever getting stuck in the down-point of a story project!! We can DO this, you guys!)

What is your current WIP?

  1. This is epic, Anna! I’ve never thought of taking notes about my writing while I’m writing, but now it seems like something I have to try!

My current WIP is a contemporary sibling story that’s in edit/rewrite mode. I’m trying to figure out the balance between not losing sight of the slowly-building conflict and not making my main character get her feelings hurt every other page…

    1. Aw thanks, Angie! It’s fun and helps me remember story thoughts, you should definitely try it sometime. πŸ˜‰

Your story sounds so sweet and real and dear!! Ooh i getcha, sounds hard but you can do it! Can’t wait to read this book. πŸ™‚

      1. Aww, thanks, Anna! I hope it ends up that way. πŸ˜‰ My goal is to have it ready for beta readers in May and hopefully release in summer or early fall! πŸ˜€ It’s exciting/scary!

  2. Oh my gum! The Tita and Nic thing was awesome! Random is always the best stuff.
I once had the idea of writing a story about a guy with OTMD, which is something I made up which means One Time Memory Disorder. πŸ˜‹

    1. Hey, thank you for commenting! lol Thanks, it cracked me up when it suddenly popped into my brain. XD TOTALLY, fist bump for random!!

ooh man That sounds great!! lol How does OTMD work?

      1. *fist bump* Flalalalala…..(sorry, had to do that)

OTMD is were a person can only remember things once. So if he tells someone something, he won’t remember it. So they would have to be very careful about what they tell people.

        1. AAAWW!!! Baymax!! *melts*

Oh wow, that’s a really cool idea! I can see how OTMD would make a lot of different plots super interesting! And possibly heart-wrenching. πŸ˜‰

    1. I’m glad you liked it, Julia girl!

      Right??!! Same! Like, “well I’m writing but I don’t like how it’s working!” πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜› I think that’s me 95% of the time…

  4. I am SO BAD about getting stuck in the down point! Similarly, when I try to write romance, I have a terrible time getting my characters together…I can write them separate, and I can write them together, but making the transition is such a struggle!

I loved hearing your random thoughts while writing, it made for a fun post! And I’m also totally on board for “awkwording” being a thing lol

    1. Wow I’m sorry for you but also glad I’m not alone in this! πŸ˜‰ WE CAN MAKE THE PEOPLES CHANGE. πŸ’ͺ πŸ˜›

Thank you, Jana! And me too… “awkwording” is, by popular vote, absolutely a thing now. πŸ˜‰ Just gotta spread the word!

  5. Anna, sometimes I swear we have swapped journals or brains or something. XD THE TITANIC THING THE TITANIC THING *dies laughing* *face keyboards* *accidentally deletes novel* NO COME BACK TO MEH
And yes, you are not the only one. I got stuck on mine and I’m still stuck. XD But I’ll probably keep at it- only way to finish! πŸ˜› XD Also, lemme know when Eagledare needs a reviewer or something *raises hand* I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE! πŸ˜€

    1. Eeek same, Jo! It’s crazy! πŸ˜€
HAHA Don’t! You get that novel back!!!
Oh dear, that’s good I’m not the only one but not good too. πŸ˜‰ Yes DO keep at it!
Aw thanks, lady! I’ll keep your volunteering in mind!
      (aha i got that reference πŸ˜› )

  6. This was a lot of fun to read! Ugh, the life of a writer. Lol, love how your mom offered to stick her finger down your throat. πŸ˜‚ It does sometimes need to be done however, to write realisticly how it happened. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Happy writing! This has inspired me to continue. ❀

    1. haha Cool, yay!
Eww glug yeah. XD I like to write my ill characters while I’m not feeling well so it turns out really realistic. πŸ˜›
Hey that’s super! So happy. πŸ˜€ Keep up the writing!!

  7. You’re definitely not the only one stuck in a tragic downpoint, millions of miles below sea level. 😒😭
That was a super fun writing party!! Only wish Paul coulda been home. “nasty old college” Yup. xD

  8. Such a fun post, Anna! πŸ˜€ Yep, your brain sounds an awful lot like mine. Only I don’t usually write it down. Not sure I want to . . . πŸ˜‰

I’m currently working on a story with triplets named Sofia, Geneva, and Vienna. Such fun. *runs away to rejoin characters as they have to walk through their dark neighborhood at 10:00 at night!*
And yes, I get stuck at down points too. πŸ˜›

    1. Hey thanks, Rebekah! ❀ haha Aw you should try journaling while writing. You don't have to show it to anyone and it's a lot of fun! πŸ˜‰

Writing triplets sounds like a challenge and a blast! Pretty names! *sends an amazing sweet but deadly German Shepherd to accompany you and your characters!* πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜›

      Thanks for commenting, lady! πŸ™‚

  9. Okay… πŸ˜‚ Tita & Nic was the funniest thing I’ve read all day, even though I despise romance and fiercely refuse to ship anything. I want to come write with y’all!! (I so need someone yelling β€œFIVE MORE WORDS BROCK KELLEY” when I get in the β€œdown” parts of my novel…)
And the random β€œSOUP KITCHEN” thing sounds like something my brother would random say to make me laugh. β€œHey…SOUP KITCHEN!”

    1. lol Glad you enjoyed, Kassie! XD
And oh man you sound so like me with the romance thing up until like a year ago when I discovered what my sis Kate and I now call a “sparkle” where it’s just two characters being best friends and working together really nicely and you can decide in your head whether or not they’re a ‘thing’ waaay after where their book ends. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜› heehee
Aw that would be fun to have you come write with us! Maybe someday… πŸ˜‰

(ok, i couldn’t figure out what you were talking about until i realized you had read through the comments. *hides* Yeah, it’s an inside reference and real specially encouraging. πŸ˜‰ ❀ )

HAHA That's great! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ "SOUP KITCHEN" was a note-to-self not to forget to write that part of the story… but it does sound like a silly thing a brother would yell!

Thanks so much for this fun comment, Kassie!
