Christmassy Blessings

As I look back at December, the last month of 2018, it was really hard in a lot of ways. BUT as I told a friend over chat when we were saying “happy new year” to each other– “It’s crazy how fast it went by but when I think over the months I realize just how many special memories are hidden along the way” โค God blessed that season in SO many ways.

Soย I decided to make a list of what I especially enjoyed this Christmas and am thankful for! (not chronological… cuz I’m never good at doing thatย ๐Ÿ˜›)

Wandering around Barnes and Nobles with my siblings and melting over all the gorgeously bound hardcover classics!!! And sneaking snippets of interesting looking books, and loving a Robert Frost anthology, and helping siblings choose Christmas gifts for other siblings. Not to mention smelling random books… ๐Ÿ˜€

Older siblings buying us Chickfila peppermint shakes to share! I had never tried one, and I’m 100% obsessed!!

Advent with the family. Anticipating and building up to the celebration of Christ’s birth together and hearing the story over again is so special. โค

Using super comfy and cute Bluetooth earbuds my brother gave me. They’ve been the BOMB for listening to the Bible while doing chores and stuff!!

The Generation Rising gingerbread house and cookie party that Tanner organized. It was a total blast and also my first time ever making a gingerbread house!!ย ย read more about it in our newsletter here

The stack of six brand new beautiful books my brother gifted me for Christmas!!!! Like, whaaat?!!! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Putting in the backseat of our 15 passenger van and squeezing everyone +our extended fam in and driving around the neighborhoods looking at Christmas lights and singing. Forcing one blanket to span five people, breaking up a candy cane among our back seat, and the entire vanload somehow all forgetting the words to a Christmas carol. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘ Amazing Christmas Day night!!

The time a friend, Kate, and I got peppermint shakes (thanks for mine, Kate!!), totally froze in the windy air, and then went to a super cheap showing of the “Nutcracker and The Four Realms”! So fun! And extra cool that mom came with us. โค

we were sooo cold!! and fangirling ๐Ÿ˜‰ โค

The box of hot chocolate packets, the festive elf hat, and a big bag of marshmallows from my youngest sister. And the note that said the marshmallows were for throwing at Paul and ** friend. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘

Getting to re-meet awesome cousins we hadn’t seen for 15 yrs! They’re the best!

Jack Lewis, our Christmas puppy!! Like, we got a real live Aussie for Christmas!! It’s like something that only happens in a book or something but it really truly happened you guys!! He’s adorable and smart and cuddly and zany and was a complete and total surprise from Dad and Mom to the family.

Our church’s Ladies’ Christmas Tea was fun (haha Who am I kidding, it was more like “YUMMY”! ๐Ÿ˜) but the clean up in the kitchen afterward was actually my favorite part. ๐Ÿ˜ We were all way too tired and just one brave gang united against the evils of dirty dishes and breakable tea sets and sinks of scalding hot water. We sang random songs and laughed a bunch and I ended up babbling about the “happy snowmen” on the mugs. Oh and I maybe caught the chocolate fondue fountain before it hit the ground and got chocolate on my nose that someone tried to wipe off aaand so we had a mini chocolate fight. XD

This year all us siblings drew two of each other’s names for who to gift. Keeping who I was shopping for a secret from “my persons” proved to be hard and hilarious, but I super liked what I ended up giving them and they did too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Doing another “Weird Author Sibling Chat” with my ppls!! That was great!! We answered y’all’s questions of things– if we had 3 wishes, our favorite Christmas traditions, and even attempted to say “Merry Christmas” backward. ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜›

part 2

Singing at our Christmas recital with a group of friends. “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” with an extra cool verse, written by a friend, that wraps up the song’s story beautifully!!

The Christmas Cage. Let me explain. Mom has a huge wrought iron bird cage for decoration and, when we don’t have a tree yet, we put our presents inside the cage instead. It’s kind of weird but fun too!

Kate and I enjoyed having a gigantic peppermint bark packaging party together, scrapbooking cute tags for the little bags and everything. ๐Ÿ™‚ (Read that sentence as fast as you can. It’s fun. *hides from my terrifically bad writing* )

When it was only a few days before Christmas and we still didn’t have a tree so us kids kinda all quietly accepted the fact (they’re expensive y’all!!). AND THEN DAD DRAGGED ONE INSIDE all nonchalantly after work one day!!! So exciting!!

Jamming to the Christian radio in the backseat with my crammed-in buddies and eating candy canes from Pearl! We were literally bouncing the van up and down. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™ˆ

Hope you enjoyed seeing some of what I was up to during that looong blog silence! ๐Ÿ˜‰ What are your favorite memories from a Christmas? ~A

    1. It was! Christmas was extra hard but also extra awesome. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Agreed! What’s your favorite 2018 memory, Jo?

OH MAN YES YES!!! Peppermint shakes are sooo good! You gotta try one! Kate and I had them two times in the same month with the same friend at the same location and the same fun chickfila employee was there so there’s a hilarious story about that. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™ˆ

  2. Love this post, Anna! And I canโ€™t believe you actually got a dog for Christmas! Yes, that is something that seems to only happen in books. ๐Ÿ™‚ Heโ€™s so cute!
It sounds like you had a wonderful December.
Some of my favorite memories from December include: caroling at a senior center with a few friends, caroling to all the widows at church with a large group of friends and children, being in our churchโ€™s Christmas play (I was only in a little but it was still fun), sharing 24 Christmas books with my blog readers, publishing โ€œChristmas Quilts,โ€ celebrating Christmas with my brother and his family (littlest nephew hugging and kissing his new stuffed bear, almost 4-y-o niece getting her first 18โ€ณ doll, hanging out together), a quiet Christmas day with just us 4, and reading lots of Christmas books! ๐Ÿ˜€
    Well, you asked. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. (This is Amie. And no, I’m not explaining, because I feel like I’ve explained enough why I decided to change my name to Cam Adams, LOL.) This was my favorite post, EVER! Literally, I enjoyed seeing what the whole Willis family was up to for Christmas. This Christmas at our house was truly a very “Willis” Christmas. We received all Perry Kirkpatrick’s Kitten files, “Crossroads”, “Kiera”, and “Twin Arrows”. I’m on the edge of my seat for your book, Anna!

  4. Iโ€™m always so inspired Anna by your determination to share the positive blessings in life. Thank you so much for being such a wonderful example. Your light and faith shines so brightly and I come away touched every time I read your posts. Thank you Anna. Sending love and prayers and gingerbread men even though itโ€™s after Christmas.

  5. We have two Aussies, and they are adorable! Iโ€™m not particularly a dog person, although one of them seems to have taken a liking to me *hides from dog slobber* But sheโ€™s loyal, so what can I say?

Okay, while mint + chocolate isnโ€™t really my flavor, this year I really got into the peppermint mocha flavored coffees and stuff. There was a really good flavored creamer I stocked up on โ€” and I donโ€™t normally use flavored creamer. And then McDonalds ((yick โ€” I hate their food!!)) had a delicious peppermint mocha โ€” that you could order hot or iced. That kinda changed my opinion of McDonalds =P

We always go to look at Christmas lights too! We all pile into our bus and take a scenic drive all over the place. Normally it includes a stop at a favorite Mexican food place for nachos to share.

I have two favorite memories of Christmas โ€” the first is the caroling party my parents let me host. Every year, for the last four or five years, I gather a group of friends and we go caroling around my grandparents neighborhood. This year everyone I invited said yes to coming, normally itโ€™s just a handful of people. So all 35 of us piled into our 16 passenger bus with the girls sitting and the guys all standing and trying their absolute best (and failing, I might add) to keep from falling on us. It. was. epic. I LOVE singing with a group of people, and since half these people know how to harmonizeโ€ฆโ€ฆit was total bliss!

The second was my younger sister getting engaged to a guy whoโ€™s pretty much a brother already ๐Ÿ˜€ We were so excited for them, and it was REALLY quick! We spent Christmas Day planning the wedding โ€” which will take place in 7 weeks. Iโ€™m not sure what they were thinking, but at least we talked them out of the whole lets-get-married-in-January thing they wanted to do =P

  6. Anna you have wonderful memories. Congratulations on your Aussie . You and your family know how to have fun in everything you do. My favorite memories from Christmas is exchanging cards or greetings with family and friends, receiving pictures from people you havenโ€™t seen for awhile, visiting with our friend we knew since we were children and opening books on โ€œLittle Christmasโ€ or on The Three Kings Day.
Wishing you and yours A HAPPY,BLESSED NEW YEAR

  7. Anna, you have such a superb way of describing all your thoughts. I enjoyed reading about your fantastic Christmas . One of my best memories from Christmas 2018 is getting the 8 foot tree up with no problems. Usually it takes my 2 sisters and me quite a while to get the tree straight in the stand. We had a good time opening out gifts on Christmas day. On Epiphany we always wait to open our book gifts. We all received some special and interesting books. Thank You for sharing your Christmas memories. God Bless.
