Shallows: A Surprisingly Deep Book

Another book celebration so soon? Yep! Because this one is free right now, and I justย had to let you know. ๐Ÿ˜€

So I’ve been stalking this author… well, not exactly stalking but for sure excitedly obsessively enthusiastically finding out anything I can about her books. What books? Like, THESE books!!!

Shallows and its sequel Phantoms, by Denver Evans.

I have to say right off, I don’t usually read books like this. Historical Fiction is usually my favorite genre, and I don’t often branch out unless a book cover grabs me or a synopsis demands that I satisfy my curiosity. This time… it was both.

When I first sawย Shallows’ย cover, designed by the amazing Perry Elisabeth, I wanted to know what it was about.

Then the synopsis. You guys.

Clean, YA fiction with an “old” feel and a tiny smidgen of friendship-based romance? A shy inventor with an adorable hat, cute mannerisms, and a charming hometown… but with literally zero friends? A sea shanty that haunts him and an unusual fear of the sea in a world of tough, burly fishermen? A deep plot with hidden, life-changing themes and breath-taking twists and turns? A spunky girl who just wants to be seen as what she is– a friend and not his mortal enemy? Mermaids that aren’t creepy/weird/fish-things? A unique cross between real-world-feeling fisherman island life, some epic fantasy elements, and even a teensy bit of steampunk?

I read it. I loved it. I fangirled over it. I analyzed it. I discussed it. I made other people read it. I even hated it for a little while.*

Oh wait, those ^^ are basically the reader’s stages of grief…

Because,ย Shallows by Denver Evans was so good it confused my heart and brain and mushed them together in one big mess of “heart eyes and sobs”. XD

Excited yet? Here’s a proper synopsis, because I’m not so good at explaining stories I adore. lol

(* There’s an evil, evil bad guy who does evil, evil things. But that’s sort of the whole point and the MC is working hard to defeat him… no spoilers. ๐Ÿ˜€ Just a warning, because I want to be considerate of different people’s reading standards.)

About the books…

The sea isn’t safe. Only the bravest and strongest become sailors. Luminescent mermaids roam the depths and the shallows, mouthing words no one can hear, never surfacing.

When bookish Emerson Kadwell befriends one of the mermaids and discovers their tragic history, heโ€˜s determined to seek justice for them. But his village mocks him, and Shaman Orithโ€™s assassins lurk at every turn. They will stop at nothing to keep the Shamanโ€™s secret safe.

Can a quiet inventor really change the world?

A luminescent mermaid. A bookish inventor. A terrible truth.
Shallows is a clean YA fantasy novel with elements of paranormal and romance. It is the first in a series.

Aaand guess what?! Denverย just released a sequel!!! AAAHHH! I enjoyed an ARC copy–probably thanks to my insane amount of author-stalking and loud fangirling and because Denver Evans is such an amazing person.

Phantomsย is just as epic as the title and pirate ship suggest. More intense, I would say, and we come in contact with the story’s antagonist* a lot… but EPIC. ( โค “quiet gifts” theme ๐Ÿ˜ฎ )

More of my Emrie (aka Emerson to the newer fans in the fandom. jk) and Saria and those two cool nameless sailors. More of Emrie’s fantastic mom, and fun/quirky village people, and some brand new characters too.

Like the swaggering sheriff guy with a gigantic ego, a heartbreaking backstory (or so I’m guessing????), and some of the best, snarky quotes ever. And then there are those other people… with the blue eyes and strange, um, abilities… *zips mouth shut* Just go read it so I don’t burst. ;P

(* Bad guy is a bit spooky. I would say this book is slightly less tame than the first yet still completely clean. Look at Goodreads reviews to see if it would bother you because, personally, I’m not giving any more spoilers. XD)

Phantoms (Shallows, #2)

Being captured by pirates wasn’t part of the plan. And they’ve never met pirates like these…

After his adventure with the mermaids, Emerson is happy to get back to normal life, and he is thrilled that his days often include visits from pretty Saria Beggley. Not all is right with the world, however. Pirates have begun terrorizing ships around the eastern islands in the chain; and ships, sailors, and even passengers are going missing every day.

Blown off course by a freak storm, Emerson and Saria are captured. They discover the pirates are not what they thoughtโ€”even moreso the feared Pirate King responsible for it all. When a legendary phantom ship shows up in Cayan waters, the mysterious crew enlists Emerson’s help in stopping the ever-expanding menace of the pirates.

As Emerson’s feelings for Saria begin to blossom, he wants nothing more than to see her safely home to Chadwick. But the only way to safety for any of them is by thwarting the plans of the Pirate King.

Phantoms is a clean YA fantasy novel with elements of paranormal and romance. It is the second in a series. Please note that while it is a complete story, there are some unanswered questions that lead into book three, coming Fall 2018.

  1. So… What do you mean by “Mermaids that arenโ€™t creepy/weird/fish-things”? I don’t like mermaids… like, at all…. but the books sound interesting.
Don’t mean to sound rude, but I have pretty high reading standards. ๐Ÿ˜‰
